Much of the information needed to effectively understand, anticipate, manage, and operate in the global environment is found in foreign language speech, text, videos, and images. But there is a critical lack of exceptional computer scientists, linguists, and automated tools to understand, translate, and learn from this data. And this shortfall is particularly acute with lesser spoken languages. Even for languages where Human Language Technology (HLT) solutions exist, overall accuracy and performance is still insufficient.
EdC’s Research Fellows are dedicated to solving this problem. By conducting funded research in automatic speech recognition (ASR), machine translation (MT), natural language processing (NLP), information extraction (IE), information retrieval (IR), text-to-speech synthesis (TTS), and related speech and language processing technologies, EdC’s Research Fellows are solving tomorrow’s HLT problems today.
And in doing so, they help inform our foreign policy, promote our national security, and deepen our global understanding.
